What a week!

Benjamin is a week old today and you could have never prepared us for the roller coaster this first week would be. We are so thankful that today he seemed very comfortable and went another full day without pain meds. That is just amazing to us when we look at his chest tube and the incision from the TEF repair. His BR levels also came back down to a normal level so they turned off the Bili light. It was so wonderful to get to take off those huge glasses and get to see his face and eyes all day long. He really woke up this evening around 8:30 and was bright eyed and looking around for the rest of our visit. He even searched for his daddy when Jerry made little bird chirping noises over his head.

Tomorrow brings very important tests on his Esophagus and Urine flow. The Esophogram will show us the condition of his new little esophagus and the Urine flow test is a reflex test so it shows if the urine is going in the right direction and not backing up into the kidneys which could cause infection. Since his momma left his diaper off a little too long and Benjamin urinated all over himself tonight we have high hopes that everything is working the way it should.

Please pray that he would continue to be comfortable and that he would heal completely and that no infection, ect would slow down the healing process. We also pray that the tests tomorrow show a functioning esophogus and urinary tract and that we can soon move to the step down nursery on the 3rd floor of Children's.

We are so glad that Benjamin doesn't have to sunbathe any more!! We will be praying that his tests go well so that he can take that next step to being home with his family!

Your story about Benjamin sprinkling himself reminds me of a story about Aiden. When he was in the hospital and still so tiny (less than 2 pounds at this point) he wouldn't keep a diaper on. He was wearing "WeePee's" and would wriggle out of them. So then they decided to use a preemie diaper opened up but not secured and kind of make a wall between his legs to catch his urine. Well, Aiden decided to operate out of the box at a very early age and proceeded to arc a stream of urine over the diaper and all over his toes. They then resorted to cutting the tip off of the pinky of a rubber glove and place it right on top of his, well, you know......to keep the urine from going everywhere. A preemie prophylactic!!! How funny is that???? Those boys.....

Melanie; As a labor and delivery nurse in Portland, OR I have seen this situation a few times and it is always so amazing to me how well these little babies do with all the treatment they must undergo. Their resilience is so incredible! I will continue to lift you and your sweet family in prayer. Additionally I will pray for your health care provider team. That they are clear and present with what is before them so that they may take gentle and effective treatment to correct the situation.

Your faith will carry you well, but I hope that it is reassuring to you to know that there are people across this great country praying for your family and especially for sweet little Benjamin.

I have faith that this will be a distant memory by the time Convention rolls around so you can share beautiful pictures of your family with me and I can give you the real hug that I am sending you via e-mail right now. Take care of yourself! Brenda Saling

Melanie...when I had my daughter, Erin, I developed Beta Strep. We were both very ill. We weren't sure that she would even make it through the night. It was a terrifying experience. Reading about what you're going through with Benjamin brought it all back. I wanted you to know that Erin will be 25 next month! You and your family are in my prayers...I hope that sharing my personal experience brings you strength during what I know is a difficult time. Your SLAH family is praying for all of you. By the way, Benjamin is an absolutely beautiful little boy! Cheryl Huntzinger, Reading PA
